Schreiner MediPharm’s NFC-Labels Offer Increased Protection Against Counterfeits

By means of a smartphone, users can quickly and reliably check if they’re holding an original product in their hands.

Counterfeit medicines pose a risk to patients and can inflict considerable damage on pharmaceutical companies concerned. High-priced pharmaceuticals and those in great demand are particularly attractive for counterfeiters.

With its NFC-Labels, Schreiner MediPharm has developed an especially secure digital solution offering not only optimized counterfeit and tamper evidence but also enabling interactive patient support. By means of a smartphone users can quickly and reliably check if they’re holding an original product in their hands.

The trend toward self-medication using pens and autoinjectors is growing. While traditional sealing solutions and overt authentication features already offer patients a certain degree of protection against potential fakes, digital features considerably enhance security.

Schreiner MediPharm’s NFC-Labels have integrated chips with an encryption function whose codes can neither be faked nor manipulated. The end user merely needs to hold their smartphone against the NFC-Label to check the product’s authenticity within seconds.

Thanks to its special design, the NFC-Label wraps around part of the cap of the pen or autoinjector, thus enabling an irreversible digital sealing function in addition to digital authentication. During the scanning process with the smartphone, an automatic check is performed to verify if the product is still intact or has been opened before.

In addition to higher product safety, NFC technology enables tracing of gray market activities. As a result, pharmaceutical manufacturers can check their supply chain and patients are provided with additional security when using their medication.

Thanks to a particularly robust label design that protects the integrated chip against mechanical stress and potential functional failure, the NFC-Labels can easily be integrated into pharmaceutical production processes. The label can be reliably dispensed even on high-speed systems while the NFC functionality is fully preserved, enabling reliable reading of the chip data during the entire product lifecycle.
